Earth, water, air, sky and fire are, as we have already learnt, the five
elements that govern our existence. Panchabhoothas, our ancients called them.
Pancha means five and bhoothas represent the elements. These five elements are
apart from human control. Neither do these function within fixed parameters. As
long as everything is fine, these elements are a joy to behold and a bounty to
be enjoyed. But in their fiery aspect, they are like any other bhootha (the
devil). Only the Divine can control them. Precisely, for this reason, it was
enjoined on us by our ancients not to live in a place where there is no temple.
As a matter of thanksgiving, we earmark a portion of our
house exclusively to the Divine. If it is a big house, it’s pooja room, or, in
a smaller one, a shelf. The pooja can be described as a sort of communication
centre between God and man. When in the pooja one should behave as if one were
communicating with God. All unnecessary talk should be avoided. Daily worship
is as necessary as our other daily duties. Since in this mechanical age it is
not possible for us to visit the temple daily, the pooja fulfils this need. The
pooja, therefore, can transform the house into a veritable temple.
The pooja room or shelf should not be put up anywhere at
random, but chosen with great care and in a spirit of bhakti, devotion. The
Divine presence will then always be with us. Evil forces will not touch us,
obstacles will be removed and even the consequences of our past bad deeds will
be considerably reduced. Our intuition will identify our covert enemies and
help us to act with caution. Open your heart for a few minutes in the pooja
before you go out for work. You will gradually find that you will graduate from
being a devotee to that of a friend of the Divine.
Remember that the pooja inside the house is equal to the
temple outside. Keep it always in an auspicious condition. All the afflictions
of bad Vaasthu will evaporate if the pooja and, indeed, the entire house were
kept neat and clean. You will find the signs of wealth everywhere in the homes
of some rich people, especially the new rich, but the house itself might be
dirty and shabbily maintained. Lakshmi does not live for long in houses that
are unclean and dirty. Before long, these people will find their riches
disappear.
You will also find many others with very limited means
maintaining the house, which includes the pooja, spick and span. They might be
poor at the moment, but in due course Lakshmi will shower her riches on them.
Just like the eyes, ears, mouth, etc., in their proper place
make us look human, the pooja should also be located in the right place. When
everything belongs to the Divine why look for the right place for Him, some
might be tempted to ask. Well, we will then come up with this counter question.
Whatever food we eat goes only to the stomach, so why not eat it in the
washroom or its attached counterpart, the toilet? There is a place for
everything. Agreed?
Now let us try to find out the best location for the pooja.
The northeast, the Eesaana corner, some might point out. Actually, this is a
bad place for the pooja. Before we learn why, let us look at the favourable
locations.
